Treating chronic neck tension with Neuromuscular therapy

Many causes for neck pain

Neck tension and discomfort can originate from a myriad of conditions and factors.  From sitting at a desk for prolonged periods of time, sleeping positions and driving, we have our head and neck in some very funky positions!

Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a very effective modality in assessing where neck tension may be originating from, and then mapping out the myofascial pain patterns and trigger points that will help alleviate the discomfort you’re experiencing.  Some trigger points that manifest in the neck can cause headaches, jaw tension, watery eyes and even coughing.  We have a trio of something called scalene muscles that help us breathe (they lift our first and second ribs!)  and when they get overly tight, they are quite nasty!

Scalene tightness can cause:

  • Shoulder pain

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Chest pain

  • Numbness in fingers

  • Pain around the hand and arm

  • Feeling of the arm being weak or tired

By releasing and freeing up the neck muscles with trigger point work, we will experience more range of motion in the neck, less fogginess, and the ability to breathe more fully!  Our NMT therapists will assess your history, body mechanics and stress levels to create a customized and integrated approach to get you back to living with a taller spine and a neck that feels in alignment.  Trigger point holds and pin and stretch are just a few of the techniques we will utilize to release tension.

 Addressing you as uniquely whole

Depending on your unique history, we will address other areas that may be connected to the neck issue you are experiencing.  This can be any area, but some that are commonly involved are your arms, chest, abdomen, and hips. Addressing each issue with a holistic approach and mindset is at the core of NMT.
